A BOOK REVIEW
The
Creative Life
True Tales of Inspiration -
Finding your True North
by Julia Cameron
(12.8.10)
Yes,
I am a HUGE Julia Cameron fan. I've read many of her books
and was so excited to hear that she had a new one out on the
market. The moment that it was delvered in its plain manilla
envelope I ripped it open and just held it for a few minutes
savoring the possibilities held between the creamy colored
covers.
Then
I started reading it. What a detour from her other books!
I found myself wondering within the first two minutes if I
was going even like this book. Was it possible that I wouldn't
finish it? No, it wasn't bad it was just very different from
what I was expecting.
I
am so glad that I continued to read on with a clear and open
mind. Ms. Cameron, once again delivered, giving me not the
ordinary but something extraordinary. This little book made
me think and allowed me to see her as a very human writer
(lots of references to what she ate on different days and
with whom she dined as she led me down an interesting path
where I could actually see myself as a writer too. After all,
as she so eloquently wrote she made it clear that she's as
ordinary as me!
Wow,
thank you Julia for a job well done. I was sad to read the
final words while invigorated to pick up pen and paper and
begin writing immediately. I'm also going to name my inner
critic so that I can help to silence him while surrounding
myself with "Believing Mirrors" to help me along
when I stumble on my own creative path.
Three
cheers for Ms. Cameron! This is a great book for the creative
soul. Its not a how to book, just a book that whispers throughout
- "yes, you can". Listen close and you'll hear it
too!

A BOOK REVIEW
The
Children of Hurin
by J.R.R. Tolkien
edited by Christopher Tolkien
(12.2.10)
Yeah,
yeah, I'll admit it - I'm a Tolkien fan but I came to this
book a little skeptical. After all, I really loved the The
Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings series but they were finished
by J.R.R. himself. I wasn't really sure what to expect from
his son who edited the book after his father's death.
What
I wasn't expecting was such a switch from the other books.
I had always felt like The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings
books offered up hope even when things looked bleak. Not so
with this book.
It
seemed to stay on the dark side and towards the end I found
myself getting angry and upset at the storyline twist. It
wasn't something that I would want my youngest child to read.
But at the end after turning the last page I was still involved
in the story. I wanted more. I wanted a resolution that I
hadn't received yet.
That's
one sign of a good story - wanting more. Not all stories are
warm and fuzzy, either. Would I read the book again? Yes.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes, but first they've got
to like the Tolkien series.
This
book would make the ideal present for a Tolkien fan.

Our
next movie review...TRON. Look for the reviews to be post shortly!

(12.5.10)
Shopping
for the kids on your list can be hard, so we've put together the
top picks based upon "The Kid's" recommendations. Plus,
we've added "The Girl Says" with a guest review to give
a girl's perspective for the best toys for girls.
The Kid
said:
Toys. What toys
do kids want for Christmas? Toys! Just about any toy
is great but if you're looking at the very best this season I think
that's pretty easy.
I know that
most boys that I know want Star Wars Legos. They are awesome!
And let's face it, EVERY kid wants Silly Bandz.
Haven't you seen how many kids are wearing them? The great thing
about silly bandz is you can never have too many.
A couple of
other great gifts are a bucket of soldiers and G.I. Joe
Action Figures. Guess that's because us boys just love to play
war. We can't help it - these are just cool. Kung Zu...if
you don't know what that is I bet your kid does. They are the boy's
version of Zhu Zhu pets. But Kung Zu you can battle with them and
play war games with them. Like I said, us boys just like to play
war games!
I saved the
best for last - the Fushigi Ball. This is the most awesome,
totally cool toy ever. Its basically a gravity-defying ball. I read
somewhere that its designed for 'contact juggling'. I'm not sure
exactly what that means, I just know that it amazing and is definitely
on my list this year!
"The
Boy" is nine-years-old and has made his wish list and checking
it twice.
The Girl
said:
Some of the most popular toys for 2010 are Zhu Zhu Pets,
a continuation from last year, now with more varieties and accessories
to chose from. They are cute, 'running around' toys and, of course,
they're great at making noises.
Another top
toy is a L.I.V. Doll. You can change their clothes, change
their hair (they have interchangeable wigs!) and they are posable.
Last, but not least, Hello Kitty products. Hello Kitty has
lip gloss, jewelry and so much more. I, personally, adore American
Girl Dolls. They are beautiful, collectible dolls that are cool
to play with. They can be historical dolls or you can even have
one that looks just like you! And, don't forget, those different
shaped Silly Bandz for stocking stuffers!
"The
Girl" is nine-year-old Jaylene Slack, who was gracious enough
to be our guest reviewer. Thanks Jaylene!
EDITOR'S
NOTE: Now I just need "He Said" to give me a list - that
will help me with my Christmas shopping!

BOOK
REVIEW
Skipping
Christmas
by John Grisham
(12.4.10)
When
I think of John Grisham I think of books like 'the Client, The Last
Juror, books like that. After all, that's how he broke onto the
scene with intense, mysterious books that kept you turning pages
until you got to the end.
So
I was pleasantly surprised to pick up "Skipping Christmas"
and see that he'd written this as well. In fact, as I was headed
out the door of the large warehouse type store where I purchased
it the receipt checker chuckled, "That's a funny book, you're
going to like it. The movie was good, too." I had to confess
that I hadn't heard of the movie. Truth is I'd rather read the book
than watch the movie anyway most of the time.(Imagine my embarrassment
when I realized almost halfway through the book that I'd seen part
of the movie already!)
I
loved the book. It really was a quick entertaining read. I didn't
want to put it down, it was so entertaining. What a nice way to
make us appreciate the Christmas season for what it should be by
turning the tables and making the main characters 'skip' Christmas.
I loved how the supporting cast of characters, painted in a less
than perfect light came together at the end and created a Christmas
sure to be remembered by all.
The
greatest gift came at the end with the gift - no, I'm not going
to spoil it for you. You'll just have to read it for yourself to
find out. And I definitely think that you should read it! I'm going
to read it again, maybe every Christmas for a while. Read it. Enjoy
it. Experience the great versatility of Mr. Grisham's writing talents.

REVIEW
MEGAMIND
(12.1.10)
"Mega
Mind is the most brilliant super villian the world has ever known...and
the least successful." (Yeah, that's from the official Mega
Mind site!)
Three-D,
Animated.. Directed by Tom McGrath and starring the voices of Will
Ferrell, Tina Fey, Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill
He said:
I didn't go. I was working...someone had to pay for the movie and
the popcorn!
She said:
Okay, it was an animated kids movie. I wasn't expecting Gone with
the Wind or anything. It was a cute movie, lots of chuckles and
some nice rock music to tap my feet to and hum along with.
It was a lot
of fun to watch my son's reactions to the movie - seems like its
perfect for nine-year-olds.
Would I want
to watch it again? Hmmm....maybe.
She
gives it 3.5 kernels.
The Kid
said:
Mega Mind was a GOOD movie. I really liked it. I'd say if you like
SpongeBob then you will like this movie. The action scenes were
really cool and I didn't even mind that Mega Mind was always chasing
after the girl reporter.
If you have
the money and the time, oh yeah and if your parents will take you
- go see the movie. You will really like it.
The
Kid gives it 4.5 kernels.

A BOOK REVIEW
Eat
Love Pray
by Elizabeth Gilbert
(11.28.10)
Ok,
so let me start this by saying how much I'd looked forward
to reading this book. I'd had it on my reading wish list
for so long that perhaps that became part of the problem.
I wanted so much to love the book that I could barely stomach
the first section - all about eating in Italy. I actually
had to force myself to get through all of the eating and
self examination that the author was going through.
Perhaps
I just didn't want to read about eating or maybe I wanted
to shake her and tell her to get over the personal issues
that she seemed to be creating in her own life. Hey, we've
all had problems right? And how bad could hers be if she
was able to take a year off and get paid to write a book
while globe-trotting?
It
was hard to muster enough sympathy for her in the beginning
so I almost put the book down. I am so glad that I didn't!
I
LOVED the next two portions so much, even if I wasn't in
love with her being in love with...opps, I can't tell you
as that might spoil the book for some of you. But, let's
face it, who was I to pick who she should fall in love with?
I did find myself contemplating God and his role in our
lives more and envious of Ms. Gilbert for finding the genuine
peace that mediation seemed to bring her.
As
the story grew to a close I felt somewhat sad to see it
end, and very glad to that there was already a continuation
in print.
Would
I recommend the book? Yes, absolutely.
